Maintenance [update #6]

Map Icons Collection is under maintenance until further notice. You can expect server errors, or missing icons.

I apogogize for this inconvenience, the site is causing server performance issues to my host. I need time to investiguate how to fix that.

Update #1

As I investiguated the cause of the server issues, I found out my anti-hotlinking policy wasn’t working as expected. It seems many people hotlinked, causing huge server load.

Hotlinking is not allowed, please download the icons on your own server or Dropbox

Now anti-hotlinking seems to be efficient, I may enable icon generation again if it was the only problem.

Stay tuned.

Update #2

Now that the server load came back to normal, after cutting all hotlinking, I will enable icon generation again, and test again the server load.

I may cut it again if needed.

Update #3

I disabled the download all the icons at once feature, from the page http://mapicons.nicolasmollet.com/category/markers/. Creating 800 icons at once is too much for my server. I may enable it in the future.

I also installed a better cache system with “Quick Cache”. It may introduce some bugs, let me know if you find some.

Update #4

There are still some servers issues, I am disabling zip download feature, as a test to see if it’s the only function that causes CPU load.

Update #5

Zip download is still disabled but I created a static zip file so that you can still download all the icons at once, without customization:

Download all the icons

Update #6

The maintenance has now ended.

The site has some features that are disabled or changed:

  • Customize the icons all at once. But you can still download the default icons all at once on the Markers page.
  • Numbers & Letters:
    • Special Chars: this is a new page including only the special characters (for example @ # %)
    • Letters: now disabled, may come back in the near future
    • Numbers: now disabled. This page uses a lot of CPU, if it comes back it will only have a restricted numbers, up to 50. I am afraid I won’t be able to give access to icons up to 100 or 300.
  • New Cache System: there is now a powerful cache on the site. In some cases, the side effect is that icons will be missing when you customize them. I am sorry for that, the cache is the only way for my site to survive on my host.

Now it’s back to normal, my host didn’t kick me out, it’s only because I optimized or stripped almost all the features of the site.

Thanks for your attention.

I can help you with a host. It is very cheap and i'm using it for 6 years now…
the smallest hosting is at 11.40EUR / 12 months at 500MB hosting space, with 20gb traffic / month.
Please note that i am human and not any spam bot or something.

I'm sorry, I used to hotlink. I didn't notice the disclaimer but I haven't for many months now. It's pretty simple to host on Google drive or simlar cloud service now.

Looking forward to the return of your service.

Google Drive/Docs is not the best choice as they tend to change png format to jpg.
I suggest Dropbox, or even better your own web server.

I love your site and service. I hope that you figured out your problem. Hotlinking is a big no no.

I'm sorry to say I never even saw the warning about hotlinking being forbidden before (I didn't know it could be a bad thing either, honest mistake). Maybe you could make it stand out a bit more? When I first browsed the website, I only read the 'about' and 'licence' sections. Having no need to check the FAQ, only the note on category markers pages was left to notice (and, well, it doesn't exactly catch the eye).
'Hope you can fix the server issue without getting through too much bother!

  9. Congratulations on getting things up and running again :) ) We've used your site so much and love what you do!

I generated a set of numbered icons from 1 to 36, which I host on my own hosted server. I generated numbers 1 through 4 in green and 5 through 36 in red. I used them to represent positions of recordings on a map and the colour match the time of the day. However, I made a mistake and I need to invert the colors ;(. I need 1 through 4 in red and 5 through 36 in green. Is there a way you can share perhaps your code generation so I can try generating the numbered icons myself? Thanks

  12. Nuel says:

Hi all, I'm pretty new to using google map api. I am currently trying to use the jquery-ui-maps but I don't know how to make change the markers on the map. Anybody has an idea hoe to do that?

  13. bryan says:

    please bring the numbers back!!!

  14. Galen says:

Probably time to start charging a nominal fee for use/access or the zip file. That way the costs will cover the bandwidth/hosting. Not unreasonable for all the work you've put in to creating the icons and the customisation software.

I'd certainly pay for the icons and to customise them.
